Automotive Wiring Harness Design: Standards, Routing & Protection

An automotive wiring harness is the nervous system of a vehicle — route it wrong and you get chafing, EMI, or a no-start. Design starts with LV214 / JASO D608 conductor selection, then moves to bundle routing away from heat sources and moving parts. Every branch needs strain relief at connectors and tape or conduit where it crosses metal edges. For engine-bay runs, specify cross-linked PE (XLPE) insulation rated to 125 °C; for the cabin, PVC is acceptable. Ground returns should be short, dedicated, and star-connected to avoid ground loops. A design review that checks gauge vs fuse, voltage drop under crank, and routing clearance saves weeks of field failures later.
